Garland-born Donny Cates is spitting 'Venom' for Marvel Comics

After picking up Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange and Thanos books, Donny Cates' sights are now set on the longtime Spider-Man rogue -- Venom.

Donny Cates cannot be stopped, it seems. After picking up Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange and Thanos books, Cates' sights are now set on the longtime Spider-Man rogue -- Venom.

The news, revealed as part of Marvel's announcement Tuesday that it'd be relaunching many of its series for a "Fresh Start" initiative, has Cates joined by veteran artist Ryan Stegman (Inhuman, Incredible Hulk) for this new take on the anti-heroic symbiote.

Cates says his run on the book will continue to focus on Eddie Brock, the original host for Venom -- rather than Flash Thompson, a paraplegic military vet.

"I am thrilled beyond belief to share this with you guys," Cates posted on Facebook. "Anyone who knows me knows how much of a Venom NUT I am. I've been dreaming of this since I was like seven years old..."

The series comes just in time for Venom's 30th anniversary. Created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, Venom debuted in 1988's The Amazing Spider-Man #299. The symbiote quickly became a fan-favorite and solo star, coming to blows with Spider-Man on multiple occasions, but also building up a rogues gallery of his own.

This new series will also debut ahead of the Venom film starring Tom Hardy, set for release in October. The Sony-developed film will be seemingly set apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe take on Spider-Man, and puts Hardy into the role of Eddie Brock.
