Ms. Marvel is a procrastinating Avenger and more in this week's new comics

This week saw the premiere of Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix. This dark crime drama follows May's Daredevil and adds another ambiguous hero to Hell's Kitchen. It's pretty great.

Elsewhere in Marvel's world, Mockingbird is getting her own solo comic series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is at the top of its primetime cable game and Agent Carter Season 2 got a premiere date.

But DC saw a slow week. WE got some production images from the set of 'Wonder Woman' and shortlist of directors for 'Justice League Dark.' Sure, it may be hard to top Constantine from the television show, but at least we're finally seeing Deadman and Zatanna on film. Oh, and Swamp Thing.

News Roundups

No matter which side you're on, let's take a look at this week's offerings:

Marvel Comics

Ms. Marvel #1

Everyone's favorite teenage superhero Kamal Khan is back in action eight months after the events of Secret Wars. Yes, we're very well aware that the series isn't over yet, but hey, Marvel doesn't seem to be phased. After the revelation of Bruno's love for Kamala at the end of her first run, this series picks up a ways down the road.

Bruno has a girlfriend and Kamala isn't happy. On the flip side, she's now part of the main Avengers team, along with other teenage newcomers Nova (Sam Alexander) and Spider-Man (Miles Morales.) She's vacant from her friends lives and school is a second though, but that's all right, she's an Avenger!

Star-Lord #1

While the most recent Star-Lord series was a great look at what Peter Quill does in his downtime, this new series is more of a retelling of an origin story, and it's a tad weird.

Peter is a mechanic at NASA following the death of his mother at the hands of Skrulls. His mission: pilot the hidden Kree warbird spaceship away from Earth to find his mom's killers. It gives off a similar vibe to 2009's 'Star Trek' reboot, and that's quite alright.

Star Wars: Vader Down #1

It's been almost a year since Marvel launched its new line of Star Wars comics, and it's been a pretty good year at that. Both Star Wars and Darth Vader have cracked the Top 10 in comic sales almost every month since, so it makes sense to cross the two titles over, but how is it?

Well, Vader Down is pretty good. Once you put aside the fact that this series takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, it can be pretty enjoyable. Vader is on the hunt for the Skywalker boy and he'll do anything to turn him to the dark side. That is, until a rebel fleet shoots his Tie Fighter down.

Other releases to look out for: Spider-Woman #1, Captain America: Sam Wilson #3, Extraordinary X-Men #2

DC Comics

Batman Europa #1

This is a big week for Batman Europa. Why? Well, the series was announced in 2004. Yup, that's right, it's taken 11 years to come out. Oh, and it's pretty damn good.

With absolutely killer art from Lee and a stunningly narrative tale through Europe, this series packs a lot of punch. It's got Bats, the Joker and a handful of awesome spreads. The first part will be four issues, so it'll be interesting to see how the series stacks up at the end. It's a similar case to Marvel's Captain America: White, and that's been all right so far.

Batman and Robin Eternal #7

Man, this just keeps getting better and better. In this issue, the Bat Family is split in to two teams. We've got Grayson, Harper and Cassandra taking on the Prague ballet and Red Robin and Red Hood looking for clues in some dive bars. It's a Batman story without the Batman.

And above all of this we have the overarching villain of Mother, or so we think she's a villain. It looks like she's hunting orphans, and Grayson and the others are on the list. It's only a matter of time before we get a showdown between the two.

Titans Hunt #2

In some other realm of continuity, Dick Grayson is looking for the Teen Titans of world's past, starting with Garth, also known as Aqualad. And when Grayson uses the lungs of an Atlantean to lure Garth out, he isn't very happy.

Elsewhere, Roy Harper is drinking and driving and getting stopped by police. He seems to be trying to get somewhere in a hurry, but despite his superhero name being Speedy (and later Arsenal) he ends up getting based. Not so speedy.

Other releases to look out for: Action Comics #46, Bizarro #6, Martian Manhunter #6

Winner - Marvel Comics

And another week goes to Marvel as Kamala Khan and Star-Lord make their All-New debut and Star Wars gets its first crossover. Sure, these series have a lot to prove before they are mainstays once again, but they are more than on the right track.

DC was close with Europa finally seeing release, but let's see how things play out when the Dark Knight III: Master Race debuts next week.

Indie Spotlight

Each week we'll put up one independently published comic we think you should read. This week it's...

Huck #1

This new series from 'Kingsman' and 'Kick-Ass' creator Mark Millar tells the story of a humble man, Huck, and his quest to do one good deed every day for his entire life. Whether it's taking out the trash for everyone in town or mowing someone's lawn, Huck is on the case.

Millar said he was inspired to write Huck after the release of 'Man of Steel,' since he did;t think it represented the classic character of Superman all that well. So, he made his own Superman. When Huck sees the horrors of the outside world, he's ready to do a good deed outside of his small town at the risk of his own identity.
