Huge data center campus expansion coming in Plano

Dallas-based DataBank is adding to its project in Legacy business park.

A Dallas-based tech firm is planning a major data center expansion in Plano.

DataBank Inc. just raised $533 million in debt and equity to fund construction of new data centers. About a year ago, DataBank received a $2.2 billion recapitalization led by SwissLife Asset Management.

The firm has more than 65 data centers in two dozen markets in North America and Britain. It owns seven data centers in the Dallas area in downtown, North Dallas, the Love Field area, Richardson and Plano.

Its 16-acre Plano campus is in Legacy business park.

Databank is planning to start construction early next year on a $280 million, 265,000-square-foot expansion of its Plano data center at 8735 Dominion Parkway, according to planning documents filed with the state. The three-story building is scheduled to open in 2025. Dallas architect Corgan is designing the project.

DataBank’s Plano expansion is just the latest in a series of recent big data center developments in North Texas.

Dallas-based Skybox Datacenters and developer Bandera Ventures are building a data center campus on 100 acres in Lancaster near Interstate 35E. Addison-based Compass Datacenters is building a more than 500-acre data center campus near Interstate 35E in Red Oak.

In August, Google announced plans for a more than $600 million data center in Red Oak, south of Dallas. The first phase of that project will be about 285,000 square feet.

Dallas-Fort Worth is one of the country’s fastest-growing data center markets, with millions of square feet of new projects on the way.
