Recipe: Add Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum to your next ice cream float

Welcome to a tongue-in-cheek, but sometimes super serious column documenting adventures with spirits and cocktails when out and about or from the comfort of my own home. Let's discover new things together!

Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is a Caribbean spiced rum blended with natural flavors and spices. This 92-proof spirit was inspired by legend Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, who is famous for the impact he made on modern tattooing. No need to have (or get) a tattoo to enjoy Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, though. I find that it's not as sweet as other spiced rums and that's a good thing.

This rum isn't overbearing when you mix it with other ingredients and it's delicious straight up, too. Everyone knows about mixing rum and Coke, but there are actually a lot of unexpected ways you can enjoy Sailor Jerry.

For a casual date night at home (or just because), try this fun recipe:

  • 4 parts root beer
  • Vanilla ice cream

Add Sailor Jerry and root beer to a sundae glass (¾ of the way filled). Spoon a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream on top. Watch the overflow as it fizzes up. Serve with straws and spoons.

There are even more enjoyable, playful and interesting cocktail recipes on the Sailor Jerry website, like the signature Jerry & Ginger Beer or the Hellfire, which combines the rum with beer and hot sauce. Spicy! After tasting Sailor Jerry for the first time, I was even inspired to make my own recipe, which is perfect for parties!:

Rachel's Sailor Jerry Special

Fill flask with rum and place into handbag or back pocket. Sip often directly from flask. (Did you think this was a joke recipe? Well, it got me through the holidays so the joke's on you. Enjoy!)
