Expensive taste: $4,500 whiskey should be first thing you buy with Powerball winnings

In the last few years, whiskey has grown in popularity. With so many brands available and new distilleries emerging or redefining themselves, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the options. This column is here to help you learn the basics of various whiskies, scotches and bourbons before you invest in a new bottle.

When they call your lucky numbers for the $1.5 billion dollar Powerball Wednesday, you will need to celebrate. We know just the thing: The M.

The M single-malt whiskey is the one of the most expensive expressions ever sold. Everything about this bottle exudes class and sophistication, from the hand-blown Lalique crystal decanter, to the whiskey inside. Even though there is no age on the bottle some of the whiskey inside dates back to the 1940s.

This bottle will set you back around $4,500, so if you win you will be able to afford a few. I couldn't afford the price tag, so I had a dram of the M Series instead, which could set you back around $300-plus per glass. The taste was magical -- the flavor seemed to change 50 times as it floated around my mouth.

The taste was so complex and delicate, I needed to seek some reinforcements. According to the very knowledgeable Dallas Macallan rep Jeremy, the spirit smells of dried fruits, vanilla and green apples. They go hand in hand, none taking the lead. Ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon create an ensemble in the background, with polished oak offering to overstate, yet it never does; rather it plays with a depth of resinous, juicy oranges.

The palate is rich in wood spices slowly showing all their viscosity. Think wood smoke. Heavier raisin and sultana flavors then take over, meandering to a long full finish.

These bottles are hard to come by, so if you want one after you hit the jackpot or have any other questions about The Macallan, reach out to Jeremy on any of his social media accounts. You won't regret it.
