Ambitious or just plain nuts? Go around the world in 80 drinks at this Deep Ellum bar

Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic Jules Verne novel about a wealthy Englishman who circumnavigates the globe to win a bet.

Around the World in 80 Cocktails, however, is the new travel-themed drink menu at Trick Pony. The moody bar is part of the bi-level Harlowe MXM complex on Main Street in Deep Ellum. This marks Trick Pony's third themed menu, with prior iterations paying tribute to Bill Murray and the '80s.

The ambitious menu launches Tuesday, March 13 and will introduce six cocktails for the next 12 weeks and eight cocktails on the final one. (That's 80 drinks total.) Each week's cocktails will be available until the following Tuesday, when they disappear and a new pack of cocktails rolls out.

So get them while they last.

Several drinks hail from American cities, like the Manhattan (New York), the Brown Derby (Hollywood) and the Last Word, which is a Detroit original. But things take a decidedly international turn with the Fishy Surprise, a Vietnam-inspired cocktail featuring whiskey, Drambuie, lemongrass, citrus, Worcestershire and fish sauce -- yep, fish sauce. Then there's the Nineteen Twenty-Four, a Sri Lanka-inspired drink that mixes palm arrack, sherry, maraschino liqueur and fortified wine.

"I just wanted to do something that would be challenging but allow us to have fun with it," said Beverage Director Alex Fletcher. "I've also had a huge itch to travel lately."

The menus required a lot of research from the team at Trick Pony, as not every country in the world has a robust cocktail culture.

But that didn't stop the Fletcher and his crew from unearthing unique drinks that originate from or pay homage to countries such as Ecuador and Egypt.

So while you might not be able to visit all of the included countries in person, you can at least drink up some culture.

"My hope is to inspire people to be curious," Fletcher said.

Trick Pony is located at 2823 Main St. in Deep Ellum. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
