The Brick gay bar closing after 25 years

After 25 years residing near the Oak Lawn neighborhood of Dallas, The Brick has announced it's closing.

The gay bar, known widely for its drag shows, will close July 24, according to a media release. Owner Gregory Parrish says he and his partner are retiring, and in fact they planned to several years ago, but "we love the LGBT community so much and just couldn't let The Brick go," he said by email.

"Our lease is up and the time is right for us to pass the torch to a new generation," he added.

The bar will be hosting a farewell party on its last day, which Parrish hopes longtime patrons will attend.

"Over the years we have watched many young men and women go from kids into productive members of the community," says a note on the business' Facebook page. "We started here when our community had few places to go. Times are changing and we are hopeful that progress continues for the LGBT community and Oak Lawn."
