Hutchins BBQ adding drive-thru, more seating to McKinney smokehouse

It seems North Texas' appetite for barbecue is driving major growth in the restaurant business. Yet another smokehouse, Hutchins BBQ in McKinney, has announced plans to expand.

Hutchins, which was voted Dallas-Fort Worth's favorite barbecue joint in a 2014 GuideLive poll, will add 3,000 square feet of real estate to its flagship location. The expansion includes a banquet room, updated patio, a drive-thru, two new pits and 140 extra seats. That's right, you will soon be able to have your brisket, ribs and sausage as well as some elbow room.

Construction is expected to begin in September and to finish before the end of the year, according to a press release.

Founded in 1978, Hutchins BBQ is a family-owned and operated joint currently under the direction of pitmasters Tim Hutchins and Dustin Blackwell. The business moved from its original location to the McKinney site in 1990. In 2012, the restaurant suffered a fire and had to close but reopened six months later.

In 2013, the restaurant was named one of the top 50 barbecue joints in the world by Texas Monthly, due in no small part to "fatty nirvana, melt-in-your-mouth tender" brisket and "above par" sides. The following year, the business added a Frisco outpost.

Hutchins is just one of several local 'cue spots on the up and up. In August, Heim Barbecue, which started as a food trailer, opened a brick and mortar location in Fort Worth to an enthusiastic (and hungry) crowd of hundreds. And earlier this year, the notoriously tiny Cattleack Barbeque reopened after an expansion.
