Following the enormous success of Nintendo's NES Classic, which contained 30 nostalgia-filled video game hits and was the gift to give last Christmas, everybody more or less knew that a Super Nintendo version was likely to follow suit.
Surprise! They've announced the Super NES Classic Edition, a mini 16-bit system that will include 21 games including Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Perhaps most notably, though, the Super NES Classic Edition will include Star Fox 2, a game that was mostly-finished back in the '90s but was never released.
You may remember (because the wounds are still fresh) that Nintendo discontinued its last retro console, the NES Classic Edition, earlier this year despite low stock and blockbuster sales. One has to hope that the company does a better job of meeting demand this time around, but you still might want to buy one early if you're interested.
Update at 2:13 p.m.: Nintendo has told Kotaku that, yes, they plan to make "significantly more" SNES Classics than they did the NES Classic, which shipped just over 2 million units. That said, they only plan to ship the Super NES Classic Edition through the end of 2017. It's a limited edition item.
"While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it," Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doug Bowser (yes, that's really his last name) said. "With the Super NES Classic Edition, new fans will be introduced to some of the best Nintendo games of all time, while longtime fans can relive some of their favorite retro classics with family and friends."
If you ask me, Bowser is correct. The SNES era is one of the best eras of video games, and this mini console includes some of the greatest games of all time.
The Super NES Classic Edition will be released on Sept. 29 for $79.99. Considering the full list of games (which you can see below), it doesn't sound like a bad deal.
