See the first trailer and gameplay for 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild'

Update: The all-day livestream for the latest Zelda game can still be found in the video player at the bottom of this post, but if you just want the quick highlights, here's the debut trailer:

The game is called The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As previously hinted at by Nintendo, the game is a departure for the series in that it seems to be borrowing extensively from open-world RPGs like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In addition to a huge, vibrant world to explore, you will apparently be able to find and equip different types of gear and weapons, collect resources, climb trees and cliffs, slide down mountains and much more.

There's also at least a hint of voice acting, which is also a major step forward for the series.

And since it's a modern Nintendo game, it also supports Amiibo. One of the coolest features of the toys that Nintendo has touched on so far is that if you scan in your Wolf Link Amiibo from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wolf Link will fight alongside you in Breath of the Wild.

Original story: Nintendo's Wii U console has been out since 2012, but it still doesn't have a mainline Zelda game of its very own. It has Hyrule Warriors, a Dynasty Warriors-esque spin-off, and remastered versions of older games in the series (Wind Waker and Twilight Princess), but Link's maiden voyage on the Wii U has been delayed multiple times.

Now it's supposed to be coming in 2017, and it will launch both on the Wii U and on Nintendo's new, barely-announced console, codenamed the NX. We've seen very little of it so far, though. Just a lot of grand talk about how this new Zelda would theoretically diverge from the tried-and-true structure of adventures past.

Nintendo is devoting almost their entire presence at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to Zelda, starting with a livestream today where they will dive deep into what is supposed to make this game so special.

Their livestream will begin at 11 p.m. central time, though it actually won't start with Zelda. They're going to kick things off with a little Pokemon Sun & Moon beforehand.
