KFC's got a new video game in which Colonel Sanders catches babies and punches a client

KFC has a new Colonel Sanders, and with him comes a new video game about his life. Apparently there is a rich Kentucky Fried Chicken back story that I'm not aware of. Did I miss the series of novels or made-for-TV movie? Because for me, ColonelQuest is a descent into madness.

In the game you, as Colonel Sanders, will dodge rulers that teachers throw at you, bounce babies on trampolines (what?), get into a shootout at a filling station, beat up one of your law clients and, of course, serve some delicious fried chicken.

KFC calls the game an "8-bit 'Atari' style game where players must master different real-life scenarios from Colonel Sander's life." I thought that this had to be a lie -- a series of tall tales concocted purely to sell me chicken -- but according to the University of Texas Press book Colonel Sanders and the American Dream (which I stumbled onto via Wikipedia) there's truth to the absurdity. Or at the very least it sounds like Sanders really did practice law for a few years before he "engaged in a courtroom brawl with his own client."

Side note: KFC? Learn your bits, because I'm pretty sure this game has more than eight of them. Also, when you say "Atari," I assume you mean the 2600, which was not an 8-bit system.

Anyway, ColonelQuest is not a terrible game, all things considered. It's not great, either, but I've played worse promotional tie-ins made for food chains.

The real bummer about it, actually, is that the final level is a poor clone of the arcade classic Tapper (sometimes known as Root Beer Tapper). It mostly made me want to close my browser tab and just play Tapper instead.

But hey! At the end of the game I got a coupon for $5 my purchase of an 8 piece meal or larger! So I've got that going for me, I guess.

Still, as far as Quest games go, it's no Chex Quest
