On their 25th anniversary, the Nintendo World Championships are coming back for E3

Back in 1990, the Nintendo World Championships kicked off here in Dallas before touring the rest of the nation. Video game fans everywhere competed in hit Nintendo Entertainment System games like Super Mario Bros. and Tetris for a shot at fame and fortune.

Now, 25 years later, Nintendo is finally bringing the NWC back.

It sounds like it will be more subdued than the extravagant events of 1990 -- the regional qualifying events will take place at select Best Buy stores across the nation, rather than, say, Fair Park -- but the spirit of the competition is the same. "Winners from each event, plus competitors invited by Nintendo, will meet on June 14, at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles for a multi-round Nintendo game competition," Nintendo says. "In the end, one player will be crowned the 2015 Nintendo World Chamption."

Nintendo doesn't say what games will be part of these competition, but the qualifying rounds will be happening very soon. May 30, in fact. There's no word yet on which cities will host events, but you would hope Dallas would be one, especially considering our history with the Nintendo World Championships. One of the 1990 champions, Thor Aackerlund, was a Carrollton resident at the time of the competition.

Alone with the NWC announcement, Nintendo confirmed that they will air their pre-E3 "Nintendo Digital Event" -- where you can expect news, demos and game announcements -- on June 16 at 11 a.m. central time. Later that week fans will be able to visit select Best Buy locations to play a demo for Mario Maker on the Wii U.
