The quick-and-dirty highlights:

  • Mewtwo is coming  to Super Smash Bros. as DLC on April 15.
  • More DLC for Smash is coming, including Mii costumes like Link's outfit, and Mega Man X and Protoman costumes.

  • Lucas from Mother 3 (the sequel to Earthbound) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii is coming to Smash as DLC. Planning for a June release.

  • Nintendo wants your suggestions for Smash Bros. characters.
  • May 29 is the next wave of Amiibo. July for the wave after that. Pre-ordering has already started, and it's a colossal mess.

  • Downloadable game "amiibo Tap Greatest Hits" coming this spring. Tap amiibo to the GamePad to unlock Virtual Console demos.

  • Nintendo is exploring ways to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. this year, but one of their major focuses is Mario Maker. It will be available for the Wii U in September.
  • Yoshi's Wooly World for the Wii U will have a "Mellow Mode" (basically easy mode) and launch this Fall. More importantly, they will be releasing special (and adorable) plush Yoshi amiibo to go along with it.
  • Some new Splatoon modes were shown off, as were the Splatoon amiibo Nintendo has planned.
  • Nintendo 64 and Nintendo DS games are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. You can use a variety of screen arrangements for DS games, depending on what you're playing. N64 games will cost between $9.99 and $11.99, or $2 if you bought them on the Wii. DS games will cost between $6.99 and $9.99.
  • Nintendo showed off a bunch of indie games coming to the Wii U, including The Adventures of Pip, Octodad, Mutant Mudds Super Challenge and Don't Starve: Giant Edition.
  • Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensei was finally shown off with an awesome (and incredibly Japanese) trailer.

Original story: April 1 isn't the most ideal day for real, no-joke video game announcements (considering most developers are too busy making fake news as April Fools' Day pranks), but Nintendo is doing it anyway. (In their defense, it will already be April 2 in Japan and Europe.)

We don't really know what to expect from this Nintendo Direct. Nintendo's e-mail to me about it just says they will be "providing updates about upcoming Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games. And keep watching after the Direct for a short Nintendo Treehouse presentation featuring one of our spring 2015 releases. Don't let the date fool you: This Nintendo Direct is no joke!"

That said, since they just delayed The Legend of Zelda for Wii U, this would be a good time to trot out another classic Nintendo franchise: Star Fox. We know it's coming, and it will supposedly be this year, but we know next to nothing about it.

Other games I would expect to see in this Direct are Splatoon, Yoshi's Wooly World and Mario Maker. Hopefully, though, we'll get a surprise or two as well.

The live broadcast kicks off at 5 p.m. central time. You can watch it on Nintendo's website or right here via the video player below.
