Josh Hamilton's ex-wife Katie Hamilton on dating her daughter's friend: 'I feel torn'

One of the best cast members on Marrying Millions might just be 23-year-old Dallas-area rapper Kolton Pierce.

"This dinner is super awkward," Kolton says. He's a twentysomething who dropped out of college to pursue his music career, and he's now dating baseball player Josh Hamilton's ex-wife Katie Hamilton, age 37. He's at a fancy steak dinner, trying to convince his friend, Katie's 18-year-old daughter Julia, that dating her mom is not weird.

Seems like the formula for a reality TV show, no? Yes. Marrying Millions is a TV show on Lifetime about how people from modest beginnings fall in love with millionaires — and vice versa.

In most cases, their dating choices don't seem to be popular with family and friends. Which makes for delicious TV. "Kolton could be my stepdad," Julia says to her mom. "That's super weird."

Weirder still, Kolton and Katie are only one couple from the Dallas area who appeared on Episode 1 of Marrying Millions on its July 10 premiere. The other is 61-year-old Dallas developer Bill Hutchinson and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Brianna "Bri" Ramirez. The math there is pretty shocking, and there's a lot there that the producers can explore. But it's the Kolton-Katie story line that felt more tense in Episode 1.

Viewers learn early in the show that Katie's net worth, "according to Google," she laughs, is $10 million. It's taken her four years since her divorce from Josh Hamilton to "even think about dating," she says. "But I'm there now."

She started dating Julia's friend Kolton while Julia was living out of state. Cut to the reality show, and cameras follow mom and daughter as Katie breaks the news: She's dating Kolton. She would consider marrying him. And she may consider having kids with him.

Julia's jaw drops.

"If I would have had it my way, I would have not picked my mom to date one of my best friends," Julia offers. Nobody disagrees with Julia.

When the three go on their "awkward" dinner to III Forks, Katie greets Kolton with a kiss. Julia stands there.

"Oh my gosh, you guys kissed," Julia says. "That's different."

Much of Marrying Millions is a tension-filled reality soap opera, where the storylines are so out-of-the-ordinary that you might not be able to turn off the TV. Will Bri, who was raised in what she calls a "rough neighborhood," get used to living Bill's extraordinary lifestyle, what with the 9-bedroom house and the charity functions? And, oh yes, the 40-year age difference? Will Julia allow her friend to become her stepdad?

Katie says she has to put her four daughters first. "I feel torn that my relationship bothers my daughter, and I really have to reconsider how to move forward if she doesn't become a lot more comfortable here pretty quickly," says Katie. But what does that mean?

Fine, see you next week.

Marrying Millions airs at 9 p.m. Wednesdays on Lifetime.
