Locally shot and set Queen of the South is getting another boost from a familiar place.

Telemundo star Rafael Amaya (El Senor de los Cielos) will return for the second season of Queen of the South

Locally-shot 'Queen of the South' begins at end for a drug- and intensity-fueled thrill ride

Amaya plays Aurelio Casillas, a drug lord, on both shows.

This is more than a crossover. It's also a flip back: Amaya played the role of "El Guero" in La Reina del Sur," the well-regarded precursor to USA's Queen of the South and both adapted from the novel. Jon Ecker (Narcos) plays "El Guero" in the USA series.

Queen of the South is the story of Teresa Mendoza, who goes on the run after her dealer boyfriend is killed at the behest of his drug kingpin boss. She flees Mexico and ends up in Dallas.

Season Two of Queen of the South is currently filming and will premiere later this year. Natalie Chaidez (12 Monkeys, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) is the new showrunner.
