Surprise! Netflix's 'Stranger Things' wins TV's top prize at politics-heavy SAG Awards

There were a few surprises Sunday night during the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Netflix series Stranger Things took home the trophy for best TV drama series ensemble, breaking the streak of Downton Abbey. William H. Macy of Shameless won best TV comedy actor in a victory against master award winner Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent). Denzel Washington was as shocked as anyone that he won outstanding performance b y a male actor in a leading role for Fences, which he also directed.

And Hidden Figures walked up and grabbed outstanding cast in a motion picture in a La La Land season. And Mahershala Ali  walked away with two statues, for supporting actor for his role in Moonlight and as part of the ensemble for Hidden Figures.

But there were a couple of non-surprises, cable and streaming services winning the night. Oh, and actors choosing to go political at the microphones.

Orange is the New Black won best ensemble in a comedy series for the third straight year.

"We stand up here representing a diverse group of people, representing generations of families who have sought a better life here from places like Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Ireland," star Taylor Schilling said, "and we know that it's going to be up to us and all of you, probably, to keep telling stories that show what unites us is stronger than the forces that divide us."

But all were winners voted on by their peers.
