This week in home entertainment

There is one slave narrative familiar to most: the one that chronicles life on the plantation. But Underground is another thing.

Slaves on the Macon Plantation make the decision that could change their lives -- or end them. They decide that freedom is worth the risk and escape the plantation. The series was the most-watched one in WGN history.

As well it should be. The story is unexpected and the actors are stellar, including Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Aldis Hodge, along with Christopher Meloni and Mykelti Williamson. Amirah Vann is riveting as a slave that heads the master's household and his heart; Marc Blucas shines as an agent of the Underground Railroad.

And the music? Well, let's just say it's unexpected. Grammy winner John Legend is an executive producer, after all.

Underground: Season One is available this week.
