'Hannibal' showrunner Bryan Fuller will helm the new 'Star Trek' for CBS

The showrunner for CBS's new Star Trek isn't boldly going where he's never been before. Bryan Fuller, known for recently running the critically acclaimed NBC series Hannibal, got his start writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. Now, he's returning to Starfleet to helm the new Trek that will be available on the CBS "All Access" streaming service early next year.

Fuller also worked on the first season of Heroes (the season everybody liked. Before it got kind of bad), created the Emmy-winning Pushing Daisies and is currently executive producing American Gods, based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name.

"My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls," Fuller said in a press release. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before."

Kurtzman added, "Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan's devoted care. His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds."

We still don't know much about the new series' plot and nothing about its cast. The show will debut on the CBS Television Network before moving to CBS All Access, the network's attempt a their own subscription service a la Hulu. Star Trek will be the first original series developed exclusively for the service.
