Amen Dunes, the New York rock band led by Damon McMahon, creates hypnotic songs anchored in mystery and melody: “Blue Rose,” one of the standout tracks from the band’s latest album, Freedom, sounds like Conor Oberst re-imagining David Bowie’s Berlin years. Freedom has received some rave reviews, but McMahon has gotten more attention in recent weeks for a 2014 interview in which he said he didn’t want to collaborate with women because “my energy would not work with that.” On Dec. 30, he issued a statement explaining that, as a child, he was sexually abused by two adult women. “Recovery from this kind of trauma is slow,” he wrote on Facebook. “At the time of that interview I did not feel comfortable collaborating with a woman as I was still in the early stages of this process.”
