For more than 30 years, around 50 artists have maintained studios in the 130-year-old Continental Gin Building, one of Dallas’ oldest structures, which has fallen under disrepair and, under new ownership, will soon undergo extensive renovations. But, many call that preservation effort bittersweet. The building will be converted to a multi-use retail complex and the artists, whose monthly rent was around $1 per square foot, will not return. This final open studio event will “showcase a diverse range of art” and feature “live music, complimentary drinks and light bites,” organizers say. Read more about the artists’ history and future in City Columnist Robert Wilonsky’s commentary, “The Mall-ing of Deep Ellum Continues...” from Aug. 14 on dallasnews.com.

After three decades, this will be the final Open Studio event before the historic Continental Gin Building undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation. The two-day Open Studio will showcase a diverse range of art from local artists who have studios in the building. There will be art, live music, complimentary drinks and light bites.
