The electronic band Cut Copy sums up its sound in a nutshell with the title of its new tune “Black Rainbows”: Simultaneously dark and effervescent, the Australian act walks a tightrope between melancholy new wave and peppy pop music. On its fifth and latest studio album, Haiku from Zero, the group pays homage to ‘80s hit-makers like Human League and OMD, although frontman Dan Whitford’s voice falls more into the New Order school of morose intonation. Onstage, however, Whitford and company tend to be a bit more cheery than they are on record. Instead of relying on loops and laptops, Cut Copy rocks with a live band featuring drummer Mitchell Scott, guitarist Tim Hoey and bassist Ben Browning.
