The Dead Milkmen at Trees
Darryl Smyers Recommends
Philadelphia’s Dead Milkmen are one of the funniest bands associated with the American punk scene. The band’s debut, Big Lizard in My Backyard, in 1985, featured a near hit in “Bitchin’ Camaro.” But the Milkmen have never been about sales figures, anyhow. Ditto political correctness: Song titles like “Beach Party Vietnam” tell a good deal of the story. Often hysterical and relentless within the same song, the Dead Milkmen represent the whimsical side of punk rock, an oftentimes neglected subgenre. Thankfully, a decade-long break up ended in 2008, and the crew has been offending and provoking laughter at a furious pace.
