Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser — better known as MGMT — have spent nearly a decade trying to live up to Oracular Spectacular, their ‘08 debut which earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and yielded the trippy electro-pop classics “Time to Pretend,” “Kids” and “Electric Feel.” Little Dark Age, the East Coast duo’s fourth and latest disc, isn’t on the same level as Spectacular, but it’s got sterling hooks a-plenty. The lyrics, as usual, can be pretty dark. The deceptively peppy “When You Die” might be the most macabre song they’ve written, and several tunes deal with society’s increasing addiction to social media: “We can lose ourselves in nothing,” they sing in “Tslamp,” which stands for “Time Spent Looking At My Phone.”
