Dream of Dallas’ highest potential during this weeklong celebration of one of the most significant leaders of the American Civil Rights movement. Observances include a youth summit for high school students; an interfaith prayer service at Thanksgiving Square; a library showcase with storytelling sessions and art exhibitions at Dallas Public Libraries; networking and service opportunities for millennials; a Selma film screening at Texas Theatre; and much more throughout the week. If you can only attend one or two events, consider these highlights, both at MLK Community Center: a birthday celebration with song and dance performances and the laying of wreaths and flowers on Jan. 15, and a candle lighting ceremony honoring essay contest winners and concluding with a candlelit processional to the MLK statue on Jan. 18.

The Candlelight Ceremony is sponsored by the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Essay Contest will be announced during the program. Free and open to the public.

The celebration continues on Monday, Jan. 15., with the MLK Day Parade.
