Weezer and Pixies / The Wombats at Dos Equis Pavilion (formerly Starplex Pavilion)

It kind of makes sense that the Pixies and Weezer are co-headlining a tour this summer, since both bands hail from the era when MTV’s 120 Minutes was the tastemaker in alternative rock and both acts are led by nerdy non-showmen Frank Black and Rivers Cuomo, respectively. But that’s where the similarities stop. The Pixies’ loud-quiet-loud punk songs set the stage for grunge and Nirvana, while Weezer has always preferred swimming in the mainstream of metal-punk-pop: Its latest songs are note-for-note covers of Toto’s breezy ‘80s hits “Africa” and “Rosanna.” Maybe, with a little luck, Black will join Cuomo onstage for shrieking duet of Weezer’s Pixies-style gem “Undone - The Sweater Song.” The Liverpool-based Wombats open the show.
