In a year where many of the best albums have featured a powerful female voice over a rush of ‘90s-inspired punk-ish power-pop, Nashville’s Bully is closing out 2017 with a torrid, desperate flourish. The band’s newest record Losing is an urgent, forceful collection that pairs well with recent records from Waxahatchee, Girlpool and Alvvays. To be certain, gender isn’t the primary identifier here. Above all else, the record feels new, regardless of the group’s apparent love for Clinton-era grunge. Bully isn’t reinventing the wheel, but they are making it roll better than most.
