Ani DiFranco at Granada Theater
Thor Christensen Recommends
Change -- both personally and as a society -- has been a recurring message throughout Ani DiFranco's long career that includes her latest album, Binary. In “Deferred Gratification,” DiFranco pays tribute to Barack Obama and all the minorities and women who’ve been discriminated against. In “Play God,” she fuses a potent message about reproductive freedom with a funky, off-kilter groove that recalls Erykah Badu. She also gets nice assist from Justin Vernon of Bon Iver on one of the album’s most haunting songs, “Zizzing.” (And while Vernon isn’t touring with her, DiFranco will perform the song with an excellent band featuring keyboardist Ivan Neville and drummer Terrence Higgins.) Opening the show is MILCK, the stage name of Los Angeles singer-songwriter Connie Lim, whose song “Quiet” became the unofficial anthem of the Women’s March on Washington in January.
