The Mountain Goats at Trees
Kelly Dearmore Recommends
For more than 25 years, the John Darnielle-led Mountain Goats have been an indie band’s indie band. Despite never having attained massive commercial success, the North Carolina-based group has long been revered in the indie-folk and lo-fi circles that have catapulted acts such as Iron & Wine and Neutral Milk Hotel to a certain kind of star status. With a raw sonic quality and a focus on quirky concepts and offbeat storytelling, Darnielle and crew have excelled in offering albums that can only be uniquely described as “Mountain Goat albums.” The group’s guitar-less new record, Goths, isn’t only a fine album, it’s a refreshingly weird one, at that.
