Matthew Sweet at Kessler Theater
Darryl Smyers Recommends
When Matthew Sweet released Girlfriend back in 1991, the album was hailed as an artistic and power-pop genre breakthrough. Sweet’s third effort, Girlfriend, featured swirling (and loud) guitars, catchy melodies and such dynamic songs as “Divine Intervention,” “I’ve Been Waiting” and the title track. Sweet appeared to be at the precipice of major stardom, but it didn’t happen; successive efforts Altered Beast and 100% Fun didn’t fulfill the promise of Girlfriend. Perhaps Sweet was always too earnest and raw for mass consumption, but that hasn’t stopped him from releasing nearly two dozen albums that each have songs worth hearing. Appearing with Sweet is another shoulda-been-a-contender, Tommy Keene. Fans of the Replacements and REM already know all about Keene’s nasally charm. Like Sweet, Keene has amassed a plethora of classic albums that sit waiting to be discovered.
