Peter O’Toole stars as England’s powerful but thwarted King Henry II (the same character he portrayed four years earlier in Becket) in director Anthony Harvey’s The Lion in Winter, the most royal of the cycle of 1960s films dealing with palace intrigues in English history, returning in a gorgeous new 4K restoration from Studiocanal. At Christmas Court in 1183, King Henry argues with his defiant estranged wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), over which of their sons, Prince John (Nigel Terry) or Richard the Lionheart (Anthony Hopkins, in his film debut), shall inherit the throne. Complicating matters is King Philip II of France (Timothy Dalton, also his debut) who seeks his own fortune by demanding his daughter Alais (Jane Merrow), currently Henry’s mistress, be betrothed to Richard. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director and Actor (O’Toole); winner for Best Actress (Hepburn, in her famous tie with Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl), Adapted Screenplay (James Goldman, based on his play) and Score (John Barry).
