What do the world’s greatest pilgrimages tell us about the nature of mystical and religious experience? What does it tell us about human nature? Dr. Graham M. Schweig will reveal the ultimate yearnings of the human heart through choice words from ancient sacred texts of India and through modern photographic imagery of Hindu pilgrimage. He will share how the various external and archetypal acts within pilgrimage directly parallel the internal acts and practices within the most elevated states of yoga. On the one hand, fulfillment is found in the outer world pilgrimages to holy sites in India, and, on the other, found within the inner pilgrimage of the heart within the deeper practices of yoga.

This presentation is offered in honor of the late Fritz Wencker Petree, who journeyed to India in 2013 with fellow yoga practitioners to the world’s greatest pilgrimage gathering known as the Kumbha Mela, which attracts millions of pilgrims.

Graham M. Schweig, Ph.D. earned his doctorate in comparative religion from Harvard University, with a specialization in religions of India and the philosophy of yoga. He has been a practitioner of meditational and heart-centered yoga for over 45 years and was awarded the highest recognition for teachers of yoga by Yoga Alliance. Schweig has been consulted by universities in Europe, and has lectured in institutions such as University of Stockholm, Uppsala University, Oxford University, as well as many here in the US, and over the past ten years has delivered over three dozen lectures at the Smithsonian Institution. He has taught at universities such as Harvard, Duke University, University of Virginia, and is currently a professor of philosophy and religion at Christopher Newport University, Virginia. He has published over 100 professional articles, book chapters, including several books, among which is his acclaimed introduction to and translation of the sacred classic, Bhagavad Gita, published by Harper Collins.
