Late Night at the DMA

Raise a glass to the art of the cocktail. Go back in time to the era of Prohibition with music from the 1920s and 30s. Learn about the cocktail culture evolution, taste the winners of our second Creative Cocktail Contest, and visit our new exhibtion Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail. $15 public, $10 students (with valid ID), free for children 11 and under.

Happy Hour Performance featuring the Carolyn Lee Jones Quartet: 6:00 p.m., Atrium -- Sip a cocktail while enjoying a special performance of Chapter and Verse by the Carolyn Lee Jones Quartet. Chapter and Verse features music from the Great American Songbook of the 30s, 40s, and 50s - songs with wonderful verses long since forgotten, rarely sung and perfect for the cocktail hour! The Carolyn Lee Jones Quartet features vocalist Carolyn Lee Jones, Brad Williams on piano, Jonathan Fisher on bass, and Rich DeRosa on drums.

Late Night Creations: Mix, Mingle, and Marble: 6:00–10:00 p.m., Art Studio, Center for Creative Connections (C3) -- Be in your element or mix it up at this colorful workshop hosted by the DMA Teen Advisory Council. Expect a big reaction as our Teen Council mixes together everyday items for dazzling results, then swirl your favorite colors into beautiful creations at paper marbling stations. All ages welcome, all materials provided.

Creative Cocktail Lounge: 6:00-11:00 p.m., Founders Room -- Step up to the bar in our Creative Cocktail Lounge and order a North Atlantic, the winning creation in our Creative Cocktail Contest, while enjoying music spun by DJ Wild in the Streets. You can also try a Lavacourt Fizz, The Thirsty Cowboy, The Eiffel Tower, and Lady Godiva, the four finalists in the contest. For each Creative Cocktail creation you purchase, you will get a free recipe card featuring that drink. You must be 21 years of age to purchase drinks.

Self-Guided Tour: Historic Brews: 6:00 p.m.-midnight, Pick up at the main Visitor Services Desk -- For thousands of years people all over the world have been concocting homemade brews for lavish parties, everyday enjoyment, and ritual use. Take this self-guided tour and find these serving and storage vessels in the galleries to drink in a mini-history of brewing cultures throughout time.

Tour: “Honey, I’m Home!”: 6:30 p.m., Meet at the main Visitor Services Desk -- DMA Digital Collections Content Coordinator Heather Bowling will discuss the rise of the mid-century suburban cocktail party with objects from the Decorative Arts collection.

Late Night Talk: Shaken, Stirred, Styled: 7:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium -- From punch bowls to penguin shakers, and from the Gilded Age to midcentury modern, the DMA’s newest exhibition, Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail, explores the rise of cocktail culture through a range of objects from the DMA’s permanent collection, many of which are on view for the first time. Samantha Robinson, Interim Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, will highlight the nearly fifty works that follow the development of the modern cocktail from the late 19th century to the present.

Late Night Main Stage featuring The Singapore Slingers: 8:00-9:00 p.m., Atrium -- Grab a cocktail, kick up your feet, and dance to the music of the 20s and 30s with The Singapore Slingers. Based in Dallas, The Singapore Slingers perform authentic and original arrangements including two-steps, rags, waltzes, and fox-trots.

Tour: Cocktail Hour: 8:30 p.m., Meet at the main Visitor Services Desk -- Uncover stories of lively libations throughout history on a tour across the DMA’s collection with Sarah Coffey, Education Coordinator.

Late Night Art Bytes: Big Dada Mixer: 8:30-9:30 p.m., C3 Theater and Tech Lab -- Join LabSynthE, a collective of UT Dallas students and professors, for an hour of playful and inventive Dada-inspired installations and performances fusing art and technology. Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Dada by participating in these opportunities to mix, shake, pour, stir, and serve data.

Late Night Talk: On the Town with Craft Cocktails: 9:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium -- Mixologist Dale DeGroff, also known as King Cocktail, is credited with playing a major role in the revival of American cocktail culture. DeGroff will discuss the current craft cocktail revival—characterized by a renewed emphasis on quality ingredients and thoughtfully crafted classic cocktails—and how it can trace its history as far back as the 17th century.

Film: Ocean’s Eleven (1960): 10:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium -- Gamblin' man Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) leads a group of thieves in a scheme to rip off five Las Vegas casinos just after the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day. Each of his accomplices has a different motive, and talent, to bring to the heist. With just weeks to prepare, the crew faces some hurdles that impact their seemingly perfect plan, including Ocean’s ex paramours, who unexpectedly show up in Sin City. This film is not rated (1960, 127 min.).

Insomniac Tour: Trains, Planes, and Cocktails: 10:30 p.m., Meet at the Main Visitor Services Desk -- After you visit Shaken, Stirred, Styled: The Art of the Cocktail, join DMA Digital Collections Content Coordinator Jennifer Bartsch-Allen to discover the industrial roots of the distinctive 1930s Art Deco style featured in the exhibition.
