Fourteen blocks in downtown McKinney will be transformed into a beer garden for the city's Oktoberfest party. Begun in 2001, the three-day event also features an artist market, live music and a carnival with games and rides. And yes, there will be plenty of suds to go around, including some from local breweries Tupps and Franconia. (The latter is operated by a German who employs Reinheitsgebot, the 500-year-old German beer purity law.) Stein-holding, bratwurst-eating and weenie-dog racing competitions round out the action. Admission is free.

UPDATE: The Sunday event has been canceled due to rain.
Downtown McKinney is ready to tap the keg for the annual Oktoberfest event, three days of authentic German fun. The fest offers traditional food, music, costumes, dancing, kids activities and more. The “beer garden” covers a total of 14 blocks throughout McKinney's Historic Downtown square so guests can stroll with a German beer in one hand and a bratwurst in the other.

Admission and parking are free. Additional parking at the Sheraton McKinney, 1900 Gateway Blvd, and First Baptist Church, 1615 W. Louisiana St. A free shuttle will run frequently between both locations and the festival.
