Variety reports that final negotiations are underway for a movie based on the Friday Night Lights franchise. David Gordon Green, of Stronger and Pineapple Express, is set to direct.

The franchise is based on the non-fiction book by H.G. Bissinger, which followed the 1988 Odessa Permian Panthers through their eventual state championship loss to Dallas Carter.  In 2004, a film starring Billy Bob Thornton rehashed that story for the big screen, directed by Peter Berg.

Berg then re-worked the story of a Texas high school football team and its impact on the community into a Emmy-winning TV series set in the fictional town of Dillon. It introduced us to the phrase "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose," and served as a career boost for actors Kyle Chandler, Taylor Kitsch and Connie Britton. Friday Night Lights ran from 2006 to 2011.

Variety reports that although Universal originally toyed the idea of returning to Odessa for the new movie, it will likely be a new fictional storyline in a new fictional town.
