Leon Bridges is a Texas musician, though you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who considers him among the Lone Star State's great hip-hop acts. That is, of course, until recently when Brooklyn DJ/producer MICK decided to take him there.
MICK, whose moniker is also his first name, released a mix tape that mashes up -- and in some cases (appropriately) chops and screws -- Bridges' debut album Coming Home with some of the most iconic names in Texas hip-hop.
It's called Coming Home From Texas, and features samples from legends like UGK and Geto Boys, as well as some new verses from Bun B and Slim Thug. Seriously!
Said MICK of the endeavor:
"Leon Bridges is an underground king who made a classic album with a timeless sound. I wondered what would happen if I remix that with timeless classics from his home state of Texas?"
Bridges' smooth voice and the harder hitting beats connect like long lost siblings. But guest DJs Hasan Insane, Chris Rockaway, Donnie Houston and Chi Duly also work in funk and soul elements like an organ, and the result is on the whole is amazing.
