Mike McCarthy to return for fifth season

Mike McCarthy will get the chance to finish what he started.

Owner Jerry Jones met with McCarthy on Wednesday evening and informed the head coach that he would be returning for a fifth season. The decision ends 72 hours of speculation about McCarthy’s future after the Cowboys’ unexpected wild card exit to Green Bay.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,’’ Jones said in a statement issued by the club.

Dan Quinn leaves for Washington

The Cowboys will have a new defensive coordinator in 2024.

Dan Quinn accepted the Washington Commanders’ head coach position on Feb. 1, ending his three-year tenure in Dallas.

Quinn rejuvenated a Cowboys defense before the unit fell flat in the playoffs, allowing a touchdown on six of the Green Bay Packers’ first seven possessions in a 48-32 loss.

That ending makes for a sour final note on which to leave.

Cowboys hire Mike Zimmer as defensive coordinator

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to hire former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer as their defensive coordinator, people with knowledge of the situation told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told The News before the NFL Honors show Thursday in Las Vegas that the decision had been made, but he declined to offer a name. However, Jones said he would be ironing out final details during the ceremony.

Before settling on Zimmer, the Cowboys also looked at former head coach/coordinators such as Ron Rivera and Rex Ryan as possible replacements.

What are Cowboys’ options with Dak Prescott?

Breaking down the financial details of the quarterback’s contract.

The Cowboys can cite several factors for why they’d be compelled to sign Dak Prescott to a contract extension this offseason. In what might be the driving force that is most frequently referenced in the public discourse, the quarterback is scheduled to count $59.46 million against the 2024 salary cap.

An extension would reduce Prescott’s cap number.

Reaching a long-term deal is not the Cowboys’ only option to reduce the mammoth figure.
