Saving the planet: A guide to stylish, reusable grocery bags

Happy Earth Day!

Congratulations, Dallas residents! Thanks to the city's carry-out bag ordinance, you've been helping the planet since January 1.

According to a Dallas Morning News poll released yesterday, the majority of you are still not super fans of the ordinance (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a ban). However, many of you believe it is helping to reduce litter and and are bringing your own bags to the store.

Holstee offers a couple of different tote bags inspired by the style and typography from vintage WWI posters. The company is a Brooklyn-based creative force, so you know these bags are on fleek. These particular bags are made of organic cotton, feature a flat bottom (a feature you should look for in shopping bags) and will set you back $28 normally, but as of this article's publication are on sale for $20.

If you're looking for a more rugged set of re-usable bags with an immense amount of utility, then School House Electric has you covered. These bags will set you back a pretty penny though. The large-sized Waxed Canvas Utility Bag, pictured at right, will set you back nearly $300. However, after owning this bag for nearly a year and schlepping groceries in it in both New York City and Dallas, I can say that it is worth it. The combination of waxed canvas and sturdy leather bound by metal rivets will haul even a decently-sized turkey with ease — it really comes down to will power to carry your items in these bags.

Perhaps you're looking to say something about your particular interests while hitting up the Tom Thumb, or is the Dallas Farmer's Market more your style now that you're knee deep in tote bags? Well, Look Human offers a number of bold options for the not-so-faint of heart. A personal favorite is their Notorious R.B.G. line (that's Ruth Bader Ginsberg for those not keeping up with Tumblr). They also specialize in outfitting shoppers interested in showing that they are cat lovers, feminists and pop culture geeks.

Are you trying to be even more altruistic than you are already being by using a re-usable grocery bag? Or maybe you're looking for a slightly more masculine shopping experience. Feed may be just the ticket. Purchases from Feed go to providing meals through the United Nations' World Food Programme. Each purchase as a different impact and is noted on the site. For example a Feed One tote bag, pictured at right, is a donation to feeding one child for one school year.
