Now idle, Jason Castro reflects on 'Idol'

Fox
Jason Castro, appearing not too terribly devastated, sings his farewell song after being eliminated on American Idol.

In many ways, Jason Castro is an American Idol anomaly. The Rockwall resident got no airtime before making the top 24, but managed to amass enough fans to make it to the top four. And before auditioning for the show, he'd performed in public a whopping five times – while his Idol counterparts had previous record deals, assorted handlers and general showbiz smarts. But in the end, it was that uniqueness that helped do Jason in.

The Mach 5 in Speed Racer

It's a candy-colored whirligig of a movie. But as you skip along the surface of its computer-generated collage of surreal sights and sophisticated silliness, there's some deep fun to be had.

Bolla's pastas mostly superb; other food often falls short

Kye R. Lee / DMN
Linguine with clams is an earthy-meets-briny pleasure.

We have reached the pinnacle of an era, locally and nationally, when impressive new (or newly renovated) hotels must retain equally awe-inspiring, brand-worthy chefs to lead their restaurants. David Bull, the executive chef of two-month-old Bolla in the splendidly refurbished Stoneleigh Hotel & Spa, bestrides the typical arrangements. Though he reportedly spends a fair amount of time in Bolla’s kitchen, Mr. Bull still resides in Austin. I also suspect that his geographically diverse responsibilities account for Bolla's shaky start in the food department. Beyond the house-made pastas, which are superb, meals here too infrequently rise to the high expectations set by Mr. Bull's reputation and by the lofty prices.

On Wednesday night, Jason Castro was told his time on American Idol was over. There would be no Fox-filmed parade, party and assorted hoopla, as was the plan should he make the top three. Jason took the news well.

'Idol': Simon tells Jason Castro, 'Pack your suitcase'

FOX
Jason Castro

If you were a betting man or woman, your money would be on Jason Castro to leave American Idol this week. He didn't exactly bring his A game on Tuesday, which featured songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jason's first attempt, Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," was forced, disjointed and gimmicky. (Hey, look, they both have dreadlocks!) And that's putting it nicely.

Books turn famous Texans into paper dolls

Leila Hill
Famous Texas Men and Famous Texas Women

Texas is a big, colorful state with a big, colorful history full of big, colorful characters. The state has been a productive generator of celebrities since long before the celebrity-industrial complex came to dominate American public life. But two new books pose an interesting challenge: How many famous Texas men and women are so instantly and iconically recognizable that you can identify them based on their paper-doll representations? Based on the content of Famous Texas Men and Famous Texas Women, two new collections from "paper doll artist" Tom Tierney, the answer is not nearly as many as you might think.
