Exhibit, concert celebrate music photographer's work08:52 AM CDT on Thursday, August 28, 2008Dallas photographer Jason Janik has been capturing the local music scene with his camera for years, and many of those photos have run in Quick and The Dallas Morning News. To celebrate his work and the musicians he's photographed over the years, Quick and Kettle Art Gallery are proud to present an exhibit beginning Friday and ending Sept. 6. Several musicians will perform at the gallery during the exhibit and at a closing-night concert at Club Dada. Proceeds from the exhibit and show will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Goodbye, Dylan
The Dallas singer-songwriter scene will lose one of its shining stars soon when Dylan Sneed moves to North Carolina on Sunday. But there's no need to shed tears just yet. Save them for Saturday night, when Mr. Sneed will give his farewell performance at Opening Bell Coffee. A host of excellent performers will share the stage with him, including Doug Burr, Ryan Thomas Becker, Eaton Lake Tonics, Becky Middleton and Jacob Metcalf. Anyone who enjoys sweet melodies and smart lyrics should make a beeline for this show. myspace.com/dylansneed.
New, new, new
A few updates on new local CDs coming your way: •Denton experimental-ambient act Zanzibar Snails plans to release its new CD, Vanadium Dream, next month, but fans might get a taste tonight. The group shares a bill with touring act Indian Jewelry at the new Lounge on Elm St. my space.com/zanzibarsnails. •Zest of Yore, a rock band whose members live in Denton and Austin, will put out new CD Quality of Life on Saturday at Hailey's. Ume and Record Hop open. my space.com/zestofyore. •Dallas band Sorta has postponed the release of its new eponymous CD, the last to feature the playing of the late Carter Albrecht, to Oct. 21. Two days after it hits stores, the band will play at the House of Blues' Pontiac Garage. myspace.com/sorta.
Weekend options
Friday: "S" is the letter of the day at City Tavern, as the Slow Burners, Stumptone and Shibboleth share a bill. Dada's got the Slack, Johnny Lloyd Rollins and more. Recent We Shot JR fave Young Doc Gooden is on a packed free bill at Rubber Gloves. Jill Johnson Black Tie Dynasty is at Barley House on Saturday. Saturday: Black Tie Dynasty makes Barley House a bit moodier, Nouns Group attempts to blow the speakers out at Rubber Gloves, and Exit 380 squeezes onto the stage at the Cavern. Sunday: Not much in the way of local shows, but we'd be remiss not to mention that House of Blues is bringing in Who's Bad?, "the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band." Go gentle into that good night. This text is invisible on the page, but this text is affected by the invisible item's flow.
