Disc debuts: 'Mass Effect' and 'Call of Duty 4' video games12:00 AM CST on Tuesday, November 27, 2007Mass Effect B+For Xbox 360. Rated for ages 17 and up. $59 SPACE OPERA: Mass Effect is an epic sci-fi role-playing game from the developers who created the superb Knights of the Old Republic for the original Xbox. Mass Effect has plenty of problems: slow load times, a confusing system for keeping track of all your gear and a very steep learning curve. But the majestic plot, excellent graphics (particularly the facial animation) and a smart dialogue system that lets you play according to your personality make this one of the most sweeping and intelligent (and fun) role-playing games you'll ever play. Call of Duty 4 A-For Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Nintendo DS (360 version tested). Rated for ages 17 and up. $59 ADRENALINE RUSH: Call of Duty 4 is the most exciting, bare-knuckle game I've played all year, bar none. From the moment the game opens with a tense public execution viewed from the first-person perspective of the victim to all the various missions you have to alternately perform as U.S. and Russian soldiers, there's never a dull moment. The Call of Duty series has been focused on World War II until now, but the modern setting in CoD4 gives you access to all sorts of new goodies, such as laser sights, air support and surface-to-air missiles. The nonstop action is wrapped in a first-rate visual presentation that rivals any big-budget movie.
