Fall TV: 'In Harm's Way,' 'Valentine' and 'Easy Money' on the CW12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008The CW debuts three new shows tonight, led by reality show In Harm's Way at 7. Hosted by former Navy fighter pilot Hunter Ellis, the series focuses on people in high-risk occupations, including bull riders and rescue crews. Here's a rundown on the night's comedy and drama entries. Valentine Basic story: A family of Greek gods – matriarch Aphrodite; Eros; Hercules; and Phoebe, goddess of the Oracle of Delphi – takes up residence in modern-day Los Angeles, where the deities use their powers to bring soul mates together. It's the mythological version of Match.com.
What you'll love: The concept is refreshingly original, and if you're a fan of Greek mythology, you might like the contemporary interpretations of the storied figures. What you won't: The trite romantic quandaries meant to be set right by the Valentine family are made worse by hackneyed dialogue, unsympathetic characters and uninspired overacting. Even the family's home is clichéd: It's as though the set designers pulled the look straight from the Martha Stewart Living Greek Goddess Collection. Cue the eye rolls. Bottom line: Kudos for a new idea, but this show leaves little to love. Here's hoping Cupid's aim gets better with time. Michelle Thomas, The Washington Post Easy Money Basic story: Morgan Buffkin (Jeff Hephner) is the middle child in a Southwestern family that runs a high-interest-loan business. The smartest of the sharks, he's adored by tough-as-nails matriarch Bobette (Laurie Metcalf) but conflicted about whether he really belongs among this cast of odd, underachieving characters. What you'll love: Ms. Metcalf and Mr. Hephner are the highlights of this show – both are believable, likable and easy to watch in their roles as mother and son. The absence of teenage dramatics is especially refreshing, given the rest of the network's fodder this season. A few familiar talents (Judge Reinhold and character actor Nick Searcy) appear in the ensemble cast. What you won't: Morgan's two siblings are excessively dumbed down, to the point that actress Katie Lowes has to force a Valley Girl-ism into every statement. Despite a lack of action, the pilot manages a level of intrigue because the world of fast-cash joints is seedily interesting. But as the focus shifts to Morgan's heritage, the plot seems destined to unravel too quickly. Bottom line: Easy Money positions itself as a hard-edged family drama, a sort of kinder, gentler Sopranos. Despite such strong leads, it's a shame this series seems headed for bankruptcy. Holly E.
