DVD review: Serenity: The Collector's Edition02:57 PM CDT on Friday, August 24, 2007Serenity A- The Collectors Edition. Starring Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin and Adam Baldwin. Directed by Joss Whedon. PG-13 (sequences of intense violence and action; some sexual references). 119 mins. plus extras. $26.99
EARTH THAT WAS: Firefly was a short-lived science fiction series canceled before its time. Serenity, its major-motion-picture follow-up, is proof that there is no force greater on Earth than intensely loyal fans with Internet access. Thanks to diligent campaigning by creator and fanboy extraordinaire Joss Whedon and dozens of fan-driven sites, the story hit theaters in 2005. ATTENTION BROWNCOATS: If you're any kind of fan, you bought the DVD when it was released in 2005. So why fork out more cash? Well, it's all about the extras, baby: more than 60 minutes of them. The movie disc includes a tour of the ship by the cast and the complete Fruity Oaty Bar commercial. CAN'T STOP THE SIGNAL: The second disc features longer pieces. "Relighting the Firefly" looks at the journey from cancellation announcement to Serenity's preview at Comic Con 2005. "Sci Fi Inside: Serenity" isn't new (it aired on the Sci Fi Channel before the film was released) but it's definitely worth 22 minutes. "Future History: The Story of Earth That Was" promises some background. But nothing is exposed here that can't be found on fan-centric Web sites. BEST EXTRA: For true fans, you can't beat "A Filmmaker's Journey." The behind-the-scenes look feels more like a college reunion than actors reuniting for a new project. "Session 416," short videos of River Tam's therapy sessions, is creepy enough to warrant daytime watching. With all the lights on. BOTTOM LINE: A sci-fi fan's collection isn't complete without this one. Holly Warren This text is invisible on the page, but this text is affected by the invisible item's flow.
