Alan Peppard on Laura Bush, Lil Wayne, Michael Irvin and Dale Hansen11:51 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 23, 2008The guessing game of precisely where in Dallas President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, will settle goes on. But one thing is pretty clear: Regular patrons of Goff's Hamburgers on Hillcrest will see plenty of the first lady. Last week, Mrs. Bush made a surprise visit to Goff's to get her fix with a group of friends. The Secret Service was reportedly low-key and gave everybody lots of space. So what's the connection with Goff's? Back in 2005, Goff's was moved from its original Lovers Lane location to Hillcrest, across from SMU, and reopened by new owner James B. "Jimmy" Francis III. Jimmy's mom, Debbie Francis, just happens to be best pals with Mrs. Bush. But the first lady would be a customer even without the family connection. Apparently, when Laura was a student at SMU, she was a regular at Goff's on Lovers.
'Body man' is back
In other news, you may have read that Mr. Bush's former "body man" Blake Gottesman is back at the White House with a new title. (For fans of The West Wing, Charlie was President Bartlet's body man.) After leaving to get his MBA at Harvard, Blake has returned as the president's deputy chief of staff. The 28-year-old Austin native is the grandson of Dallas advertising pioneer Liener Temerlin, founder of the AFI Dallas International Film Festival, and his wife, Karla.
Lil fuss for Lil Wayne
After last month's much-anticipated release of Lil Wayne's album Tha Carter III, he's been riding high atop Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Not surprisingly, he gathered a crowd when he arrived in Dallas to perform at K104's Summer Jam at Nokia Theatre. Lil Wayne was sequestered at Hotel ZaZa, keeping a very low profile. But that didn't stop fans from gathering outside the Uptown hotel just in case they might catch a glimpse. Not hiding was former Dallas Cowboys star receiver Michael Irvin, who enjoyed poolside cocktails at ZaZa's Urban Oasis.
Hansen hits milestone
An early happy birthday shout-out to Channel 8's pot-stirring sports director Dale Hansen. On Aug. 2, Dale will turn 60. He was seen taking in a celebratory meal at the Palm in downtown Dallas with Channel 8's chief meteorologist – and Dale's verbal sparring partner – Pete Delkus and a group of friends. For the record, Dale had his usual 16-ounce New York strip. Pete has a birthday of his own coming up, but we'll save that for a later column.
Tesar in Big Apple
Flip your TV to Channel 5 this morning and you'll see John Tesar, chef at the Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, doing a live cooking segment on NBC's Today show at its studio in New York. John will be demonstrating a fish recipe. This text is invisible on the page, but this text is affected by the invisible item's flow.
