Jessica Simpson's controlling dad, Joe, was the main cause of the breakup last month with Cowboy Tony Romo, Us Weekly says.

The celebrity mag's new issue has a source saying that Papa asked Tony, 28, to drop his agent and let Joe take over the quarterback's career and $67.5 million contract. Joe even offered to broker a magazine deal ("the same that I did with Ashlee") should Tony and Jess, 27, become engaged, a source says.

All of which reportedly led Tony to give Jessica an ultimatum: Tell Dad to back off!

What did Joe have to say for himself? According to Us: "It's unfair to criticize me for what every manager does for his or her clients. And in this business, where people can quickly turn on you, who better than a parent to be working for his children?"

For now, a source says, Tony and Jessica are back on, in "a talking stage."
