10:50 AM CDT on Thursday, August 2, 2007

By HUNTER HAUK / Quick

There's no reason to feel intimidated by the fantastic, eclectic Denton music scene about which everybody talks and writes. Just go up there and see a few shows – you'll fit right in. But before you get to SHQ, Rubber Gloves, J&Js or any other venue, stop by li'l music and video store Strawberry Fields to pick up one of its brand-new Denton music compilation CDs.

Available starting this week for $5 apiece, volumes one and two of Denton Deluxe feature Shiny Around the Edges, New Science Projects, Daniel Folmer, Chief Death Rage, Glen Farris and the subject of heavy WeShotJR.com debate, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea. The CDs will act as the perfect primer for any Denton newbie. Find out more at www.strawberryfields.biz.

A new way to rock

For those of you who enjoy hard-driving, uncomplicated rock, you'll want to check out the upcoming release from longtime local band the Feds on Tribunal Records. A Touch of Panic comes out Tuesday, but you can get it early at the band's release show Saturday at the Lakewood Theater.

Lead singer Matt Slider said in a phone interview that the new record is "definitely the most put-together thing we've done. ... It's not conceptual in any way, but a lot of the songs' lyrics reflect our ups and downs as a band. And, of course, there are the songs about girls." Hear some new tracks at www.thefedsrock.com.

Your weekend planned

The guys in Red Monroe will serve as backing band for former Chainsaw Kittens frontman Tyson Meade tonight at the Cavern. On Friday, welcome Kristy Kruger to her old home at Opening Bell Coffee. And head back to the Cavern on Saturday for the rock triumvirate of Slowride, Max Cady and Hogpig.
