By MICHAEL GRANBERRY / Staff Writer

It's official. The record-breaking exhibition "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" is coming to the Dallas Museum of Art, outgoing DMA director John R. Lane and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert announced Monday.

The show will open at the DMA on Oct. 3, 2008, and stay until May 17, 2009, making Dallas the first city granted the right to host an "encore" showing of the King Tut exhibition after its recent two-year, four-city tour that drew almost 4 million visitors.

It opened in Los Angeles in 2005 and moved on to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Chicago before finishing a stop in Philadelphia late last month. It will soon move to London, and after leaving there, proceed to Dallas.

"We are honored to be the first institution to host the encore tour of" Tut, Mr. Lane said Monday. "The DMA is extremely pleased to be able to share these exceptional works of ancient Egyptian art with the community we serve and to further reinforce the Dallas Arts District as an important destination for visitors seeking the best in cultural experiences."

The Dallas engagement marks the first time that artifacts from King Tut's tomb will be seen in the Southwest. The current exhibition, which is far more extensive than the one that toured the U.S. from 1976 to 1979, includes an extensive array of more than 130 artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun and other ancient Egyptian sites.
