In the Changer: Tab Benoit, Cherish and Shibboleth12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, May 11, 2008Tab Benoit Night Train to Nashville (Telarc, 2008) Without a doubt, Tab Benoit is one of the most underrated young bluesmen on the scene today. His piercing voice and wicked electric guitar licks, not to mention his penchant for Cajun passion, make this Baton Rouge native a heavy player. Recorded live onstage during a two-night stand at the Place on Second Street in Nashville, Night Train sizzles from the get-go. Accompanied by guests Kim Wilson, Jim Lauderdale, Jimmy Hall, Jumpin' Johnny Sansone and Waylon Thibodeaux, Mr. Benoit commands the mike during "Too Sweet for Me," "Rendezvous With the Blues" and "Darkness," to name a few. This is scorching stuff, folks. Mario Tarradell Cherish The Truth (Capitol 2008) Farrah, Neosha, Felisha and Fallon King – real-life sisters who make up the R&B quartet Cherish – bring tighter harmonies, lush melodies and more personalized lyrics to their enjoyable sophomore set. Snappy, club-ready tracks make up most of Truth, starting with "Killa," featuring Yung Joc. "Framed Out" describes how they keep people buzzing over their designer-label fashions, and "I Ain't Trippin' " dismisses the jealous tactics of a bitter ex-boyfriend. "Only One" offers sugary assurances to an insecure boyfriend, and "Notice," even as it borders on stalker-esque, sweetly rhapsodizes about a neighbor and his daily habits. Given its artistic honesty, The Truth (on sale Tuesday) is aptly named and will resound as such with their fans. Lorrie Irby Jackson Shibboleth Experiment in Error (Idol, 2008) The Dallas band's excellent second CD is a Whitman's Sampler of instrumental rock: Booker T.-style jams sit side-by-side with surf tunes, synth struts and sci-fi cowpoke ditties. On the off chance you miss the humor in the music, check out the song titles: "Meatballs," "Bill Cosby" and "These Are My Cousins Gastro and Cydebar." Thor Christensen Shibboleth and guest singer Bobby Patterson perform a CD-release show Saturday at 9 p.m. at Sons of Hermann Hall.
