Mariah Carey

B- E=MC2

(Island)

'GLITTER' BE GONE: After Glitter, she rebounded nicely with 2005's Grammy-winning smash The Emancipation of Mimi. So she's rehired Mimi's producers, including Jermaine Dupri, for another album of candy-coated dance-club tunes.

BRANCHING OUT: The best tracks barely sound like the old Mariah, especially the flute-laden "O.O.C." (produced by Swizz Beatz) and "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" (which could pass for a Beyoncé song). She also takes a half-decent stab at dancehall reggae in "Cruise Control," featuring Damian Marley.

THE LOST NOTE: At 38, she's toned down her zillion-octave voice so much that her dog-whistle imitation doesn't arrive until the CD-closing "I Wish You Well." But without all the bombast, is she really Mariah or just a generic dance-pop siren?

BOTTOM LINE: Change is good, but this more mature Mariah Carey takes some getting used to.
