NEW YORK – The man can get out of a locked trunk, but can he sing and dance? Escape artist Harry Houdini will be the subject of a Broadway musical that will open in New York in spring 2010, producers Scott Sanders and David Rockwell have announced.

No casting yet, but Houdini will feature music by Danny Elfman, who has scored such Tim Burton films as Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, and lyrics by David Yazbek, who wrote the scores for the Broadway musicals Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Full Monty.

The book for Houdini is by Kurt Andersen, an editor and co-founder of Spy magazine as well as a one-time editor-in-chief of New York magazine.

Jack O'Brien, the Tony-winning director of The Coast of Utopia, Henry IV at Lincoln Center and Hairspray, will direct. Mr. Rockwell will also design the show's sets.

"Houdini is an amazing, iconic figure who continues to captivate our imagination more than 80 years after his death," Mr. Sanders said.

"His colorful world defines the theatrical and, combined with this remarkable creative team, will make for a fascinating and entertaining musical."
