Douglas W. Adams, who left the Dallas Symphony Orchestra six years ago to become president and CEO of a Colorado orchestra, will return as president of the DSO, replacing Fred Bronstein, the organization announced Tuesday.

Mr. Bronstein left in February to become executive director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Since then, Sam Self, former DSO board member and Texas Instruments executive, has served as interim president and CEO. Mr. Adams will start Sept. 8.

Last year was one of change among arts administrators in Dallas, with general director Karen Stone leaving the Dallas Opera. Resignations affected four area art museums as well as the Dallas Theater Center, which replaced its artistic director.

Before he left, Mr. Bronstein hired the DSO's incoming music director, Jaap van Zweden, who will assume his duties in September.

Blaine Nelson, chairman of the board of governors of the Dallas Symphony Association, which oversees the orchestra, said a nationwide search was conducted and that Mr. Adams represented some obvious advantages.

"He has clearly developed into a very strong and highly regarded executive in the orchestra world," says Mr. Nelson. He shepherded the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver through six consecutive in-the-black years and a 40 percent increase in ticket sales.

"He also comes with a very strong Dallas connection, so more than any other candidate, he hits the ground running. He doesn't have a steep learning curve on either end," Mr. Nelson says.

Mr. Adams served as the DSO's general manager from 1999 to 2002, when he handled its business affairs. Before that, he worked in local television, serving as president and general manager of KXAS-TV (Channel 5).

"I find the chance to work with this exceptionally talented group of musicians, music director Jaap van Zweden and the dedicated board and staff of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra absolutely irresistible," Mr. Adams said in a prepared statement.
